The members of the chapters have organized and participated in several national and international events. The IGS Surat chapter has organized IGC 1982 and 1991 and several Seminars and Training programmes are actively organized.
The Silchar chapter of the Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) started its journey as 42nd chapter of IGS on 14th May, 2017 with an aim to spread the recent advancement on geotechnical engineering among academicians, research scholars and construction engineers in the North Eastern part of the country. The office of the chapter is housed at NIT Silchar. The chapter is having a strong student wing namely IGS Silchar Student Chapter which is also engaged in dissemination of knowledge on geotechnical engineering among student members.
Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) is a Scientific and a professional body providing common plate form for Interaction amongst academicians, researchers, designers, construction engineers, Civil engineering students, equipment manufacturers spread all over the country. The Srinagar Chapter of IGS, the 20TH in the Country was formally inaugurated at Srinagar, J&K by Prof. Nitin Som, President IGS on June 24, 2000 under the dynamic leadership of Brig. S. N. Mukherjee, the first Chairman of the local Chapter. The main aim of IGS Srinagar Chapter is to promote closer interaction amongst Geotechnical fraternity in the Himalayan Region in particular and all over the country in general. The IGS Srinagar was shifted to NIT in 2006 under the Chairmanship of Prof. (Dr.) Barkat Hussain. The IGS Srinagar Chapter aims to meet the long standing need of providing the forum to the Engineering fraternity to combat the innumerable problems of natural hazards after carrying out detailed scientific studies and evaluation and creating an environment for achieving the Global benchmark in Geotechnical Engineering. IGS Srinagar Chapter keeps itself abreast of latest technologies by arranging various workshops, short-term courses and Seminars to spread the awareness of Geotechnical Engineering in the Civil Construction works throughout the State. IGS Srinagar Chapter also aims to promote cooperation amongst practicing Engineers and researchers for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in all areas related to Geotechnical Engineering in all allied fields with their practical applications towards eco-friendly environment sustainability.
The Madras Chapter of the Indian Geotechnical Society (IGS) was established in 1988 and later named as IGS Chennai Chapter. IGS Chennai Chapter has more than 1000 life members including many members from the parent body. The chapter has been quite active since its inception and regularly organises seminars, workshops and invited talks. The National Conference IGC-1983 was held at IIT Madras, Chennai. IGS Chennai Chapter organised the Indian Geotechnical Conference (IGC) in the years 1996,2006 and 2016. The Chapter also organised the 4th and 8th Indian Young Geotechnical Engineering Conference (IYGEC) in the year 2013 and 2021 respectively. The chapter also organised the Sixth International Geotechnical Symposium (6IGS-Chennai) in the year 2015 and the first Symposium on Geotechnical Aspects of Heritage Structures (SGHS) in the year 2019. The Chapter was also bestowed with the Best Chapter award three times for its overall performance. website: https://www.igschennai.in/
IGS Mumbai Chapter keeps itself abreast of latest technologies by arranging various seminars. The society has eminent Foundation Engineers and Soil Engineers as members and has grown to a strength of 170 members.
The organisation of the Mumbai Chapter is well structured and team spirit has been its hall mark. By virtue of concerted efforts of the Executive Committee, the Mumbai Chapter was awarded the “Best Chapter Award” in 1997.
IGS New Delhi established it 35th chapter at Ludhiana. It was inaugurated on 7 July 2012 by then IGS president Dr K S Rao at Guru Nanak Dev Engineering College Ludhiana. The Ludhiana is an industrial hub of Punjab, well known for the cycle and hosiery industry. It is well connected to the rest of India by Rail, Air and Road. Since its inception, the chapter had conducted numerous programs for the benefit of engineering community espacially dealing with the Geotechnical Engineering Practice & education. All events were well attended with participation from both Indian and foreign soil.
IGS Bengaluru Chapter was founded in 1964 by Prof. B K Ramiah at UVCE Bangalor.e. The Centre was initially called as The Mysore Centre of Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering and later renamed as Karnataka Geotechnical Centre (KGC) Bangalore and further renamed to Indian Geotechnical Society Bengaluru Chapter in February 2014. Currently, the Chapter is operting from the Department of Civil Engineering, Indian Institute of Science. Historically, IGS Bengaluru chapter played a vital role in the growth of its national body. Three members of this chapter had served as IGS presidents, seven members had received IGS annual lectures and also received the prestigious IGS Kuckelman award. The chapter has so far organized IGC, the annual conference of the IGS six times and the Asian Regional Conference once. Many of the members of the chapter have been serving in the National Executive Committee of IGS, including three in the current term.
The Kolkata Chapter of Indian Geotechnical Society - the Geotechnical Study Circle, Kolkata was born nearly 59 years ago, when the profession of Geotechnical Engineering was in its infancy in our country. A few enthusiastic civil engineers involved in field work and research in Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering, dedicated themselves to the cause of geotechnical investigation and cultivation of knowledge in the subject.

The chapter has been conducting the annual Praphulla Kumar Lecture Series from 2012 till date.
Kerala with its peculiar geography with a length of over 600km and a width of less than 100km is bounded by the Western Ghats on the east and Arabian Sea on the west. While the hilly terrain on the east presents numerous problems associated with landslides and earthquakes, the coastal belt mostly comprises of very deep deposits of soft marine clays. The state thus provides a wide spectrum of challenges to geotechnical engineers.
The opening of the chapter was approved in the month of October 2019 and subsequently, it was inagurated formally on February 8, 2020 at the hands of Prof. G.L. Siva Kumar Babu (then President IGS, New Delhi). Prof. M. N. Viladkar (IIT Roorkee) and Prof. N.K. Samadhiya (IIT Roorkee) were the Guest of Honour. Prof. L. K. Awasthi, erstwhile Ditector, NIT Jalandhar presided over the function. The establishment of the chapter was initiated by Prof A K Agnihotri (NIT Jalandhar).
