Prof. Viswanadham has been a faculty member at the Department of Civil Engineering at IIT Bombay for the last 26+ years. He earned his B.E. in Civil Engineering from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam (1983-1987) and M.Tech in Civil Engineering from IIT Madras with Geotechnical Engineering as a specialization (1987-1989). Before joining the institute, he worked as a Senior Project Officer at the Department of Ocean Engineering, IIT Madras and as a Scientist at CSIR- Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), New Delhi, from 1989-1991 and 1991-1998. In 1996, he returned to India from Germany after completing his Doctor Ingenieur (Dr.-Ing.) programme during 1994-1996. Prof. Viswanadham is the Institute Chair Professor w.e.f March 3, 2021, and was the Institute Chair Professor from May 2017 to June 2020. He served as Dean (Infrastructure, Planning and Support) from January 1, 2016, to December 2021 (Two terms) and Associate Dean (Infrastructure, Planning and Support) for about four years and 4 months from August 2011. As an avid researcher for the past 31+ years, significant academic and research contributions have been made by Prof. Viswanadham in various areas of geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering. His notable contributions are Geosynthetics, Geogrid Reinforced Soil Walls, Soft ground improvement techniques, Liquefaction mitigation techniques, Slope protection- Soil nailing, Shoring systems with and without anchors, Rockfall protection systems, Gabion walls, Canal bunds, Bulk utilization of waste materials, Landfill liners, etc. Before joining IIT Bombay, he was inculcated with unique expertise in centrifuge-based physical modelling in Germany. Some of his significant contributions are his involvement in establishing India’s unique and large beam centrifuge facility and laboratory at IIT Bombay. Prof. Viswanadham’s contributions, especially centrifuge testing expertise, are UNIQUE and INNOVATIVE, especially in developing cost-effective systems for high-gravity testing applications and truly stand out very well. He has guided 23 (+2 students submitted) PhD students, currently guiding 4 PhD students and 39 MTech students.
